AVE ATQUE VALE

We are resisting the infamous year’s end roundup column in favor of some gloating and some predictions. The biggest gloat is the Ozymandias column consigning Saddam Hussein to a remote corner of history’s dustbin. Some future wanderer will come across this in Iraq: the remains of an Hussein icon, strewn on the desert floor, presciently as the poet wrote. Indeed, SADDAM HUSSEIN is the Mother of All Cowards. Execution is too easy for Hussein. He should live out his time in a dank, dirt hole, passed minimal food and water without ever seeing, hearing or touching a live human being until he shrivels and dies. He should never see the world again; just a low-level neon light in a crawl space. The trial will be treated as entertainment by the media, more like bread and circus than justice for the thousands tortured and killed by Hussein and his henchpersons but the outcome is not in doubt.

LESSONS & LOSERS

One lesson learned by the otherwise corrupt tyrants this world suffers is that to be on the wrong side of George W. Bush can become more than a simple or temporary problem. The Libyan dictator failed to be persuaded by the Euro-trash over the years. When he saw that Hussein had lost his bet that the axis of weasels, France, Germany, Russia and the United Nations, would prevent Bush from action did Ghadafi begin his dialogue with Tony Blair, the “good cop” of the Anglosphere’s Dynamic Duo. Ghadafi was very smart; he’ll get a better deal now than he would later. The left, at home and abroad, will attempt to spin this as a victory for diplomacy. Do you believe them or your lying eyes?

Other major losers in 2003 are the 8 people running against Howard Dean for their party’s presidential nomination. Probably the biggest loser among them is DICK GEPHARDT. He’s going to be out of a job once Dean is formally anointed; I believe he elected not to run for his present seat in the House. JOHN KERRY, the haughty, French-looking Senator from Massachusetts, who by the way served in Vietnam, while remaining a Senator, will have been diminished in stature and be a man without a political future. So will they all. Good riddance to most of them save Messrs. Gephardt and Lieberman. I think LIEBERMAN has cut himself to less than epic size though. He has pandered more than most politicos and one of his virtues used to be his stalwart principles. Sic transit gloria mundi.

GRAY DAVIS? Where is the former governor of our most populous state? No public sighting of Davis has been made since mid-November after the unceremonious ceremony installing Arnie and deposing Gray. Recall Davis was touted as a leading presidential contender after his slaughter of the Republican candidate (quick: what was his name?)

VICENTE FOX is a big loser in 2003. He carries little weight in Washington these days as there are more issues than Mexico’s to worry over. Fox is having trouble keeping his own party in power in the Old Country. By the way, have you ever noticed that the presidents of Mexico, its diplomats, most of its millionaires and all of its movie and TV actors do NOT look at all like those people we Western state inhabitants know as Mexicans. Most Mexicans I have met - all I think - are dark-skinned, short and Mestizo. None of those characteristics is a crime, wrong or bad. They are simply missing from the presidency, the movies et al. Why? Because the oligarchy ruling Mexico is of European heritage, mostly Spanish. They are also racist, bigoted and corrupt. There is no logical reason for Mexico to be a third world country. It has land, oil, other resources and hard-working people. What it does not have is honest leadership: It has a ruling class. Mexico cannot make the transition from the third world under that condition. No country ever has.

(Aside: which are the second world countries? I know who the first and third world nations are but which ones are second?)

THE BCIS nee INS is truly a shambles. Not only has it NEVER caught a terrorist prior to the commission of an act of terror, it terrorizes those who try to legally enter the United States. For example, American citizens who wish to marry a non-citizen living in an undeveloped country such as the Ukraine or Estonia complete a simple form, file in their local BCIS office to receive what is known as a K-1 visa, aka a fiancé visa. In California, they are working on applications received in May of this year, some 7 months back. And that’s not the end. After the application is processed locally, it is transferred to the U.S. Embassy in the fiance’s country where it sits for more months. But, if you sneak into the United States, get a job and live here surreptitiously, the same government will pay for your medical bills, your children’s education, forgive your trespass and pay you a pension at age 62. Now, is that nuts or what?

THE PLASTIC TURKEY story is still making the rounds. The President did not hold a plastic turkey for a photo-op; it was a real turkey and, yes, it was a phot-op, rather like Caroline on her pony.

THE FRENCH-LOVERS keep on loving. It is amazing that each time there is some opportunity for a choice in foreign affairs, the left-wingers always want us too share the opportunity with the French. The French, Madre de Dios, are always ready to join us except when they would be required to put up men or money. France’s foreign policy is essentially that it is better to give than to receive and, in le Style Francaise, it is you give, France receives. It is Franglais reminiscent of “Heads France wins; tails America loses.” What, precisely, does France bring to any deal? I’ll tell you: greed, deceit, disloyalty, anti-Semitism; they are ingrates of the first order. And I used to have a home in Paris. It’s the French who have changed and for the worse, to say the least.

TO THOSE WHO WISH ME A HAPPY HOLIDAY, I wish you a Merry Christmas.

We shall return next year, a year in which the following will take place:

1. Iraq will quiet down

2. Hussein will be executed

3. Osama bin Laden will be caught if alive or declared dead

4. Dean will be nominated

5. Bush will slaughter him

6. Republicans will increase their majority in both houses

7. No left-winger will be arrested for treason

8. No Bush-hater will move to any other country

9. Iran will allow WMD inspections

10. Oil prices will stay low

11. The economy will BOOM; invest in your 401k now

12. Interest rates will remain historically low

13. Inflation will continue virtually non-existent

14. Housing will not deflate; government causes high home prices

15. Some people will hold me to these next December
